THE ARTWORK

Portrait of Dora Wheeler

William Merritt Chase
1882–83

She reclines in a wooden chair, one hand supporting her face, the other reaching along the armrest. A blue-green dress spreads across a golden backdrop, its color echoed by the large vase beside her. The room is richly decorated, yet the eye keeps returning to her quiet face.

Behind the artwork

Chase painted Dora Wheeler in 1882–83. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, she studied painting with him and went on to design textiles; the embroidered silk hanging behind her connects the portrait with that work. This oil on canvas measures 159.8 × 166.4 cm without its frame.

The sitter is not centered. Her head rests toward the upper right, while her dress runs diagonally toward the lower left. Dark uprights in the chair cross the slant of the fabric, giving the relaxed pose a firm structure. The hand at her cheek and the pale cuff form a small path of light toward her eyes.

The blue-green vase at left answers the dress at right. Yellow flowers almost merge with the golden hanging, then separate again through petals, leaves and the dark mouth of the vase. Look at the textile patterns: from a distance they soften into a gold field; nearby, figures, flowers and scattered colored strokes emerge. Fabric, pattern and diagonals supply the movement, leaving the face comparatively still. These are observations of the image, not claims about the sitter’s mood or the artist’s intentions.

A frame for this work

Blue against a golden hanging

An ornate gold frame, without a mat, preserves the complete, nearly square painting. Its raised decoration answers the embroidered hanging, while the gold sets off the blue-green dress. A muted warm brown-gray painted wall picks up the warmth of the chair and floor, staying distinct from the brighter gold within the picture. This is a digital framing proposal by Wallside, not a reconstruction of the museum’s frame.
