Itō Jakuchū loved depicting birds in garden settings. This 1792 original color on silk work takes the form of a hanging scroll: a rooster stands on one leg among the grapevine leaves, its long tail stretching upward, while a hen tilts its head to respond to it. The feathers are finely outlined, while the grape leaves and fruit are spread with flatter ink washes, allowing two different brushwork styles to meet in a single painting.

Gazing at Each Other on the Branches
The Chinese-style hanging-scroll presentation follows the vertical rhythm of the composition. Grey-green patterned silk and dark roller ends give it a quiet boundary. The sage-green wall echoes the grape leaves, keeping the birds and vine at the centre of attention.
