THE ARTWORK
Country House at Rueil
Edouard Manet
1882
The house does not fill the view, and the shadows of the trees become the walls of the home.

In 1882, Manet, whose health was already declining, spent the summer near Rueil in Paris, turning his gaze toward the surrounding houses and gardens. In this painting, the roof is almost invisible and there is no sky; tree trunks in the foreground cut across the bright walls. This seemingly casual fragment is steadily organized by groups of yellow, blue, and green, while the red in the flowers gently breaks the balance.

A Home in the Tree Shadows
A milky white lacquer frame and beige-gray narrow mat respond to the villa's walls, while the olive gray wall continues into the garden, making the shifts between warm and cool tones between the architecture and the leaves clearer.
