A few persimmons bring the feeling of autumn to a wide expanse of empty paper.

Sakai Hōitsu painted this persimmon tree in the late autumn of 1816, and the inscription also alludes to a chilly autumn day. The original work is a two-panel screen; the ink gradation of the trunk demonstrates the Rinpa technique of 'tarashikomi,' while the curled leaves reveal meticulous observation. The large areas of paper left unfilled by foliage make the sparse red fruit and withered leaves appear exceptionally vivid.

An Autumnal Tree
The narrow maple-toned border and soft kozo paper leave the screen’s branches room to spread. A muted grey-green wall echoes the leaves, allowing the orange-red fruit to stand out. This is a digital mounting study, not the original screen furniture.
