Behind the artwork

In this 1890 harbor landscape, Seurat uses dense, separated brushstrokes to organize the sky, sea, and shoreline. The distant boats and houses are simplified into clear silhouettes, while the diagonally extending embankment in the foreground leads the eye into the depths. The colors are not mixed entirely on the palette beforehand, but instead create a slight shimmer between adjacent small dots.

Tiny Points of Light in the Harbor

The ivory white slim frame provides a clear boundary for the pointillist image, while the gray-blue wall continues the waterway and the sky; no mat is used, allowing the dense dots of color to remain intact.
