Behind the artwork

In the summer of 1826, Corot visited the Marmore Falls in Italy. This landscape also contains the history of ancient man-made waterworks. He quickly recorded the scene before him in oil on paper, then mounted the paper on a wood panel; the relationship between rocks, trees, and flowing water is organized directly and clearly, preserving the freshness of outdoor observation.

Flowing Among the Stones

The floating paper mounting uses small shadows to lift the page, the oak and warm paper matting respond to the rocks, and the light limestone wall preserves the bright air around the waterfall.
