Behind the artwork
These pale roses once held a brighter pink.
Van Gogh painted Roses in May 1890, among four flower still lifes made before leaving Saint-Rémy. The blossoms once carried stronger pinks. Fading pigments have left only faint traces on the petals and tabletop.

A room in bloom
A slender walnut frame and a light mat give the bouquet a quiet boundary. The surrounding grey-blue wall lets the painting’s greens take the lead.
