Behind the artwork

Beneath the great wave, a quiet Mount Fuji.

Part of Hokusai’s Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, this print uses perspective to make the distant mountain appear tiny beneath the breaking wave. Its blues belong to a landscape palette that included indigo and imported Prussian blue.

Hokusai’s great blue wave curls above boats, with Mount Fuji small in the distance.

Bring the sea home

A dark frame traces the print’s strong outlines. The pale mat gives the wave room to move, keeping the small, distant mountain in view.
