Behind the artwork

The wind moves through the wheat—and through the brushwork.

In the summer of 1889, Van Gogh turned his attention to the cypresses around Saint-Rémy. He painted this landscape outdoors, using thick paint and restless strokes. Two further versions followed in the studio that September.

Golden wheat, dark cypresses and curling clouds in Van Gogh’s summer landscape.

Wind through the wheat

An oak frame picks up the warmth of the wheat. A generous pale mat leaves space around the restless sky and the dark, upright cypresses.
