Chen Hongshou
1633
Beneath the layered mountains, a small figure rests quietly under a tree.

In this 1633 color on silk work, Chen Hongshou borrows from the blue-green landscape tradition, shaping rocks with flat color surfaces, patterned leaves, and clear outlines. The mountains are exaggeratedly stacked in layers, and the clouds and mist carry stylized curves; compared to these eccentric forms, the scholar and his attendant beneath the tree are painted small and sensitive, making the figure's solitude more palpable.

Listening to the Mountains Beneath the Pines
A plain silk border and dark wooden roller ends support the long vertical landscape without cropping its proportions. The warm grey fabric-textured wall continues the soft texture of the scroll and keeps the blue-green mountains in focus.
