ca. 1640
A single turn in the lemon peel can make a small painting very rich.

This oil on wood panel, dated circa 1640, is very small, suitable for close inspection by a viewer, and was one of the earliest acquisitions by the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The artist brings together curled lemon peel, a decorated glass, and oysters, using variations in transparent, wet, and rough textures to enrich the limited tabletop.

Glimmer in the Glass
The deep recessed frame uses dark layers to receive the still life background, and the gray-green wall makes the outer contour of the frame clear. By omitting white matting, the highlights of the glass and the lemon peel are more concentrated.
