THE ARTWORK
Young Woman Arranging Her Earring
Pierre-Auguste Renoir
1905
A single gesture of arranging an earring can be held as steadily as a sculpture.

In his later years, Renoir gradually turned toward a more volumetric representation of figures. This 1905 oil painting shows a woman with raised arms, her body and headscarf forming a full curve. The museum suggests it may have been inspired by Delacroix's figures; the soft brushwork does not diminish weight, but rather makes the skin tone appear substantial through the interplay of warm and cool tones.

A Moment by the Ear
The champagne gold thin edge gently echoes the earring, the beige matting connects to the skin tone, and the warm gray wall makes the shape formed by the blue-green headscarf and arms more distinct.
