An apostle looks upward, his figure emerging from deep green paper through dark folds and fine touches of white light.

Made in 1508, this drawing belongs to the Kupferstichkabinett in Berlin. The museum identifies the figure as either Saint Paul or Saint James the Greater, leaving both possibilities open. Dürer worked with a brush in black on paper prepared with a green ground, then added white highlights. The green is more than a background: it is the middle tone linking light and shadow.
The figure turns mostly away from us, but his head tilts upward to the right. Nothing in the drawing explains what he sees, so his gaze carries beyond the sheet. The ample cloak occupies most of the space. A pale fold over the shoulder turns downward, while dark hollows gather the fabric at the waist. The same garment seems alternately heavy and light.
For a moment, set aside the title and look at this as a study of light. The brightest white does not cover the robe: it touches the shoulder, sleeve and ridges of folds, leaving the green ground to do much of the work. Follow the borders between light and dark slowly, and the flat sheet begins to unfold like a landscape. The date and monogram at the top bring your attention back to the paper itself.

Follow the light through the folds
The float mount leaves a fine shadow between the complete paper edges and the backing, instead of enclosing the drawing in a tight window. A slim champagne frame and warm sand backing bring a restrained warmth to the cool green sheet; the fine lines of the laid-paper texture echo its paper surface. A terracotta-brown painted wall adds a gentle warm-cool contrast, allowing the delicate white highlights to lead.
